After days of writing and re-writing my pick lit review, I think I finally have something coherent...so here it is, short but sweet...
Ethel is the lead character in this Sylvia Plath novel. Here, the reader goes through her slow sink into insanity...or at least thats what reader's are led to believe. After all, she is institutionalized after a failed suicide attempt...however, if you take away the therapy and the mental home, then you are left with a young girl left with very little, if any, drive to live. She is the gifted kind, as most people depict most of those who eventually become mentally ill. A scholar and perhaps a talented writer with high dreams of becoming a famous name.
Everything changes when her mentor notes that she isnt giving it her best, and she finds herself tearful at a photo shoot. Her character struck me more as the kind who has lost her drive, her zest and her dream. She fears becoming shallow, and eventually, succumbs to thoughts of just being there, being nothing herself.
My thoughts on this: if everyone who finds themselves falling into a rut of un-eagerness, of not looking forward to anything,of not wanting to do anything but to create another life, in another city, bearing another name -- then maybe, most of us dreamers are doomed to be institutionalized?
